Phil Hatcher-Moore is an award-winning photojournalist currently based in north Wales, working world-wide both on-assignment and through self-initiated projects. His photographic career began in East Africa, where he was based in Kenya for five years focussing on conflict and post-conflict situations in the region, producing large bodies of work on eastern DRC and Burundi. Phil read Computer Science at the University of Sheffield, and subsequently worked as technical director of an internet start-up in Paris for three years before shifting to photography. His work has appeared in major publications, ranging from the New York Times, Le Monde, the Guardian, GQ, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, TIME, the Wall Street Journal, Der Spiegel, Al Jazeera, and has frequently contributed to Agence France-Presse. He also works on assignment for organisations including Médecins sans frontières, Oxfam, and the ICRC. Phil considers himself a journalist who uses photography as a medium through which to tell stories, although he occasionally also publishes written pieces, as well as multimedia. His work has been presented in several exhibitions and has garnered international prizes. He speaks English and French fluently. (He previously published under Phil Moore prior to his marriage in 2016.)
